2024-07-22cmd/compile: don't inline runtime functions in -d=checkptr buildCherry Mui
Runtime functions, e.g. internal/abi.NoEscape, should not be instrumented with checkptr. But if they are inlined into a checkptr-enabled function, they will be instrumented, and may result in a check failure. Let the compiler not inline runtime functions into checkptr- enabled functions. Also undo the change in the strings package in CL 598295, as the compiler handles it now. Fixes #68511. Updates #68415. 2024-07-15strings: re-introduce noescape wrapperCuong Manh Le
CL 573955 added internal/abi:NoEscape function, and use it in strings builder copyCheck code. However, internal/abi is a runtime package, which can not be built with -d=checkptr flag yet. This causes incorrect inlining decision, since NoEscape must not be inlined when -d=checkptr is used. Fixing this by re-introducing noescape wrapper. 2024-04-17internal/abi: define EmptyInterface, TypeOf, and NoEscapeMichael Anthony Knyszek
This change defines two commonly-defined functions and a commonly-defined type in internal/abi to try and deduplicate some definitions. This is motivated by a follow-up CL which will want access to TypeOf in yet another package. There still exist duplicate definitions of all three of these things in the runtime, and this CL doesn't try to handle that yet. There are far too many uses in the runtime to handle manually in a way that feels comfortable; automated refactoring will help. For #62483. Add bytealg.MakeNoZero that specially allocates a []byte without zeroing it. It assumes the caller will populate every byte. From within the bytes and strings packages, we can use bytealg.MakeNoZero in a way where our logic ensures that the entire slice is overwritten such that uninitialized bytes are never leaked to the end user. We use bytealg.MakeNoZero from within the following functions: * bytes.Join * bytes.Repeat * bytes.ToUpper * bytes.ToLower * strings.Builder.Grow The optimization in strings.Builder transitively benefits the following: * strings.Join * strings.Map * strings.Repeat * strings.ToUpper * strings.ToLower * strings.ToValidUTF8 * strings.Replace * any user logic that depends on strings.Builder This optimization is especially notable on large buffers that do not fit in the CPU cache, such that the cost of runtime.memclr and runtime.memmove are non-trivial since they are both limited by the relatively slow speed of physical RAM. 2019-10-17cmd/compile: add -d=checkptr to validate unsafe.Pointer rulesMatthew Dempsky
This CL adds -d=checkptr as a compile-time option for adding instrumentation to check that Go code is following unsafe.Pointer safety rules dynamically. In particular, it currently checks two things: 1. When converting unsafe.Pointer to *T, make sure the resulting pointer is aligned appropriately for T. 2. When performing pointer arithmetic, if the result points to a Go heap object, make sure we can find an unsafe.Pointer-typed operand that pointed into the same object. These checks are currently disabled for the runtime, and can also be disabled through a new //go:nocheckptr annotation. The latter is necessary for functions like strings.noescape, which intentionally violate safety rules to workaround escape analysis limitations. Fixes #22218. 2017-12-11strings: fix two Builder bugs allowing mutation of strings, remove ReadFromBrad Fitzpatrick
The Builder's ReadFrom method allows the underlying unsafe slice to escape, and for callers to subsequently modify memory that had been unsafely converted into an immutable string. In the original proposal for Builder (#18990), I'd noted there should be no Read methods: > There would be no Reset or Bytes or Truncate or Read methods. > Nothing that could mutate the []byte once it was unsafely converted > to a string. And in my prototype (https://golang.org/cl/37767), I handled ReadFrom properly, but when https://golang.org/cl/74931 arrived, I missed that it had a ReadFrom method and approved it. Because we're so close to the Go 1.10 release, just remove the ReadFrom method rather than think about possible fixes. It has marginal utility in a Builder anyway. Also, fix a separate bug that also allowed mutation of a slice's backing array after it had been converted into a slice by disallowing copies of the Builder by value.
