2025-05-19runtime: pass through -asan/-msan/-race to testprog testsMichael Pratt
The tests using testprog / testprogcgo are currently not covered on the asan/msan/race builders because they don't build testprog with the sanitizer flag. Explicitly pass the flag if the test itself is built with the sanitizer. There were a few tests that explicitly passed -race (even on non-race builders). These tests will now only run on race builders. For #71395. In CL 466099, we accidentally stopped tracking callees while unwinding inlined frames during traceback printing. The effect is that if you have a call stack like: f -> wrapper -> inlined into wrapper -> panic when considering whether to print the frame for "wrapper", we'll think that wrapper called panic, rather than the inlined function. Fix this in the traceback code and add a test. 2020-11-24runtime: use inlined function name for traceback elisionAustin Clements
Currently, gentraceback decides which frames to print or elide when unwinding inlined frames using only the name of the outermost function. If the outermost function should be elided, then inlined functions will also be elided, even if they shouldn't be. This happens in practice in at least one situation. As of CL 258938, exported Go functions (and functions they call) can now be inlined into the generated _cgoexp_HASH_FN function. The runtime elides _cgoexp_HASH_FN from tracebacks because it doesn't contain a ".". Because of this bug, it also elides anything that was inlined into it. This CL fixes this by synthesizing a funcInfo for the inlined functions to pass to showframe. Fixes #42754. With stack objects, when we scan the stack, it scans defers with tracebackdefers, but it seems to me that tracebackdefers doesn't include the func value itself, which could be a stack allocated closure. This is a simple tweak to allow a bit more mid-stack inlining. In cases like this: func f() { g() } We'd really like to inline f into its callers. It can't hurt. We implement this optimization by making calls a bit cheaper, enough to afford a single call in the function body, but not 2. 2018-05-22runtime: fix defer matching of leaf functions on LR machinesAustin Clements
Traceback matches the defer stack with the function call stack using the SP recorded in defer frames when the defer frame is created. However, on LR machines this is ambiguous: if function A pushes a defer and then calls function B, where B is a leaf function with a zero-sized frame, then both A and B have the same SP and will *both* match the defer on the defer stack. Since traceback unwinds through B first, it will incorrectly match up the defer with B's frame instead of A's frame. Where this goes particularly wrong is if function B causes a signal that turns into a panic (e.g., a nil pointer dereference). In order to handle the fact that we may not have a liveness map at the location that caused the signal and injected a sigpanic call, traceback has logic to unwind the panicking frame's continuation PC to the PC where the most recent defer was pushed (this is safe because the frame is dead other than any defers it pushed). However, if traceback mis-matches the defer stack, it winds up reporting the B's continuation PC is in A. If the runtime then uses this continuation PC to look up PCDATA in B, it will panic because the PC is out of range for B. This failure mode can be seen in sync/atomic/atomic_test.go:TestNilDeref. 2017-11-13runtime: don't elide wrapper functions that call panic or at TOSAustin Clements
CL 45412 started hiding autogenerated wrapper functions from call stacks so that call stack semantics better matched language semantics. This is based on the theory that the wrapper function will call the "real" function and all the programmer knows about is the real function. However, this theory breaks down in two cases: 1. If the wrapper is at the top of the stack, then it didn't call anything. This can happen, for example, if the "stack" was actually synthesized by the user. 2. If the wrapper panics, for example by calling panicwrap or by dereferencing a nil pointer, then it didn't call the wrapped function and the user needs to see what panicked, even if we can't attribute it nicely. This commit modifies the traceback logic to include the wrapper function in both of these cases. Fixes #22231. 2017-10-30runtime: make systemstack tail call if already switchedAustin Clements
Currently systemstack always calls its argument, even if we're already on the system stack. Unfortunately, traceback with _TraceJump stops at the first systemstack it sees, which often cuts off runtime stacks early in profiles. Fix this by performing a tail call if we're already on the system stack. This eliminates it from the traceback entirely, so it won't stop prematurely (or all get mushed into a single node in the profile graph). 2017-09-22runtime: hide <autogenerated> methods from call stackAustin Clements
The compiler generates wrapper methods to forward interface method calls (which are always pointer-based) to value methods. These wrappers appear in the call stack even though they are an implementation detail. This leaves ugly "<autogenerated>" functions in stack traces and can throw off skip counts for stack traces. Fix this by considering these runtime frames in printed stack traces so they will only be printed if runtime frames are being printed, and by eliding them from the call stack expansion used by CallersFrames and Caller. This removes the test for issue 4388 since that was checking that "<autogenerated>" appeared in the stack trace instead of something even weirder. We replace it with various runtime package tests. 2017-07-11runtime: make TestStackGrowth a serial testAustin Clements
TestStackGrowth is currently a parallel test. However, it depends on a 20 second timeout, which is already dubious in a parallel test, and became really problematic on slow builders when runtime.GC switched to triggering concurrent GC instead of STW GC. Before that change, the test spent much of its time in STW GC, so it wasn't *really* parallel. After that change, it was competing with all of the other parallel tests and GC likely started taking ~4 times longer. On most builders the whole test runs in well under a second, but on the slow builders that was enough to push it over the 20 second timeout. Fix this by making the test serial. Updates #19381 (probably fixes it, but we'll have to wait and see). I was surprised to see readvarint show up in a cpu profile. Use a few simple optimizations to speed up stack copying: * Avoid making a copy of the cache.entries array or any of its elements. * Use a shift instead of a signed division in stackmapdata. * Change readvarint to return the number of bytes consumed rather than an updated slice. * Make some minor optimizations to readvarint to help the compiler. * Avoid called readvarint when the value fits in a single byte. The first and last optimizations are the most significant, although they all contribute a little. Add a benchmark for stack copying that includes lots of different functions in a recursive loop, to bust the cache. 2015-06-02runtime: implement GC stack barriersAustin Clements
This commit implements stack barriers to minimize the amount of stack re-scanning that must be done during mark termination. Currently the GC scans stacks of active goroutines twice during every GC cycle: once at the beginning during root discovery and once at the end during mark termination. The second scan happens while the world is stopped and guarantees that we've seen all of the roots (since there are no write barriers on writes to local stack variables). However, this means pause time is proportional to stack size. In particularly recursive programs, this can drive pause time up past our 10ms goal (e.g., it takes about 150ms to scan a 50MB heap). Re-scanning the entire stack is rarely necessary, especially for large stacks, because usually most of the frames on the stack were not active between the first and second scans and hence any changes to these frames (via non-escaping pointers passed down the stack) were tracked by write barriers. To efficiently track how far a stack has been unwound since the first scan (and, hence, how much needs to be re-scanned), this commit introduces stack barriers. During the first scan, at exponentially spaced points in each stack, the scan overwrites return PCs with the PC of the stack barrier function. When "returned" to, the stack barrier function records how far the stack has unwound and jumps to the original return PC for that point in the stack. Then the second scan only needs to proceed as far as the lowest barrier that hasn't been hit. For deeply recursive programs, this substantially reduces mark termination time (and hence pause time). For the goscheme example linked in issue #10898, prior to this change, mark termination times were typically between 100 and 500ms; with this change, mark termination times are typically between 10 and 20ms. As a result of the reduced stack scanning work, this reduces overall execution time of the goscheme example by 20%. Fixes #10898. This makes the GC and the stack copying agree about how to interpret the defer structures. Previously, only the stack copying treated them precisely. This removes an untyped memory allocation and fixes at least three copystack bugs. To make sure the GC can find the deferred argument frame until it has been copied, keep a Defer on the defer list during its execution. In addition to making it possible to remove the untyped memory allocation, keeping the Defer on the list fixes two races between copystack and execution of defers (in both gopanic and Goexit). The problem is that once the defer has been taken off the list, a stack copy that happens before the deferred arguments have been copied back to the stack will not update the arguments correctly. The new tests TestDeferPtrsPanic and TestDeferPtrsGoexit (variations on the existing TestDeferPtrs) pass now but failed before this CL. In addition to those fixes, keeping the Defer on the list helps correct a dangling pointer error during copystack. The traceback routines walk the Defer chain to provide information about where a panic may resume execution. When the executing Defer was not on the Defer chain but instead linked from the Panic chain, the traceback had to walk the Panic chain too. But Panic structs are on the stack and being updated by copystack. Traceback's use of the Panic chain while copystack is updating those structs means that it can follow an updated pointer and find itself reading from the new stack. The new stack is usually all zeros, so it sees an incorrect early end to the chain. The new TestPanicUseStack makes this happen at tip and dies when adjustdefers finds an unexpected argp. The new StackCopyPoison mode causes an earlier bad dereference instead. By keeping the Defer on the list, traceback can avoid walking the Panic chain at all, making it okay for copystack to update the Panics. We'd have the same problem for any Defers on the stack. There was only one: gopanic's dabort. Since we are not taking the executing Defer off the chain, we can use it to do what dabort was doing, and then there are no Defers on the stack ever, so it is okay for traceback to use the Defer chain even while copystack is executing: copystack cannot modify the Defer chain.
