2025-11-21runtime/pprof: remove hard-coded sleep in CPU profile readerNick Ripley
The CPU profiler reader goroutine has a hard-coded 100ms sleep between reads of the CPU profile sample buffer. This is done because waking up the CPU profile reader is not signal-safe on some platforms. As a consequence, stopping the profiler takes 200ms (one iteration to read the last samples and one to see the "eof"), and on many-core systems the reader does not wake up frequently enought to keep up with incoming data. This CL removes the sleep where it is safe to do so, following a suggestion by Austin Clements in the comments on CL 445375. We let the reader fully block, and wake up the reader when the buffer is over half-full. 2025-11-21runtime: fix double wakeup in CPU profile bufferNick Ripley
The profBuf.wakeupExtra method wakes up the profile reader if it's sleeping, either when the buffer is closed or when there is a pending overflow entry. Unlike in profBuf.write, profBuf.wakeupExtra does not clear the profReaderSleeping bit before doing the wakeup. As a result, if there are two writes to a full buffer before the sleeping reader has time to wake up, we'll see two consecutive calls to notewakeup, which is a fatal error. This CL updates profBuf.wakeupExtra to clear the sleeping bit before doing the wakeup. This CL adds a unit test that demonstrates the problem. This is theoretically possible to trigger for real programs as well, but it's more difficult. The profBufWordCount is large enough that it takes several CPU-seconds to fill up the buffer. So we'd need to run on a system with lots of cores to have a chance of running into this failure, and the reader would need to fully go to sleep before a large burst of CPU activity. 2023-08-14runtime: profiling on Darwin cannot use blocking readsDavid Chase
On Darwin (and assume also on iOS but not sure), notetsleepg cannot be called in a signal-handling context. Avoid this by disabling block reads on Darwin. An alternate approach was to add "sigNote" with a pipe-based implementation on Darwin, but that ultimately would have required at least one more linkname between runtime and syscall to avoid racing with fork and opening the pipe, so, not. 2017-08-18runtime: fix false positive race in profile label readingAustin Clements
Because profile labels are copied from the goroutine into the tag buffer by the signal handler, there's a carefully-crafted set of race detector annotations to create the necessary happens-before edges between setting a goroutine's profile label and retrieving it from the profile tag buffer. Given the constraints of the signal handler, we have to approximate the true synchronization behavior. Currently, that approximation is too weak. Ideally, runtime_setProfLabel would perform a store-release on &getg().labels and copying each label into the profile would perform a load-acquire on &getg().labels. This would create the necessary happens-before edges through each individual g.labels object. Since we can't do this in the signal handler, we instead synchronize on a "labelSync" global. The problem occurs with the following sequence: 1. Goroutine 1 calls setProfLabel, which does a store-release on labelSync. 2. Goroutine 2 calls setProfLabel, which does a store-release on labelSync. 3. Goroutine 3 reads the profile, which does a load-acquire on labelSync. The problem is that the load-acquire only synchronizes with the *most recent* store-release to labelSync, and the two store-releases don't synchronize with each other. So, once goroutine 3 touches the label set by goroutine 1, we report a race. The solution is to use racereleasemerge. This is like a read-modify-write, rather than just a store-release. Each RMW of labelSync in runtime_setProfLabel synchronizes with the previous RMW of labelSync, and this ultimately carries forward to the load-acquire, so it synchronizes with *all* setProfLabel operations, not just the most recent. If g1 sets its labels and then they are copied into a profile buffer and then g2 reads the profile buffer and inspects the labels, the race detector must understand that g1's recording of the labels happens before g2's use of the labels. 2017-02-23runtime: new profile buffer implementation supporting label pointersRuss Cox
The existing CPU profiling buffer is a slice of uintptr, but we want to start including profiling label data in the profiles, and those labels need to be pointers in order to let them describe rich information. This CL implements a new profBuf type that holds both a slice of uint64 for data and a slice of unsafe.Pointer for profiling labels (aka tags). Making the runtime use these buffers will happen in followup CLs.
