2025-10-09cmd/compile: call generated size-specialized malloc functions directlyMichael Matloob
This change creates calls to size-specialized malloc functions instead of calls to newObject when we know the size of the allocation at compilation time. Most of it is a matter of calling the newObject function (which will create calls to the size-specialized functions) rather then the newObjectNonSpecialized function (which won't). In the newHeapaddr, small, non-pointer case, we'll create a non specialized newObject and transform that into the appropriate size-specialized function when we produce the mallocgc in flushPendingHeapAllocations. We have to update some of the rewrites in generic.rules to also apply to the size-specialized functions when they apply to newObject. The messiest thing is we have to adjust the offset we use to save the memory profiler stack, because the depth of the call to profilealloc is two frames fewer in the size-specialized malloc functions compared to when newObject calls mallocgc. A bunch of tests have been adjusted to account for that. 2024-10-28all: skip and fix various tests with -asan and -msanMichael Anthony Knyszek
First, skip all the allocation count tests. In some cases this aligns with existing skips for -race, but in others we've got new issues. These are debug modes, so some performance loss is expected, and this is clearly no worse than today where the tests fail. Next, skip internal linking and static linking tests for msan and asan. With asan we get an explicit failure that neither are supported by the C and/or Go compilers. With msan, we only get the Go compiler telling us internal linking is unavailable. With static linking, we segfault instead. Filed #70080 to track that. Next, skip some malloc tests with asan that don't quite work because of the redzone. This is because of some sizeclass assumptions that get broken with the redzone and the fact that the tiny allocator is effectively disabled (again, due to the redzone). Next, skip some runtime/pprof tests with asan, because of extra allocations. Next, skip some malloc tests with asan that also fail because of extra allocations. Next, fix up memstats accounting for arenas when asan is enabled. There is a bug where more is added to the stats than subtracted. This also simplifies the accounting a little. 2024-09-25runtime: fix MutexProfile missing root framesFelix Geisendörfer
Fix a regression introduced in CL 598515 causing runtime.MutexProfile stack traces to omit their root frames. In most cases this was merely causing the `runtime.goexit` frame to go missing. But in the case of runtime._LostContendedRuntimeLock, an empty stack trace was being produced. Add a test that catches this regression by checking for a stack trace with the `runtime.goexit` frame. Also fix a separate problem in expandFrame that could cause out-of-bounds panics when profstackdepth is set to a value below 32. There is no test for this fix because profstackdepth can't be changed at runtime right now. Not reverting the changes in std that are bootstrapped, because some of those changes would appear in API docs, and we want to use any consistently. Instead, rewrite 'any' to 'interface{}' in cmd/dist for those directories when preparing the bootstrap copy. A few files changed as a result of running gofmt -w not because of interface{} -> any but because they hadn't been updated for the new //go:build lines. Fixes #49884. 2021-10-29runtime: fix sweep termination conditionMichael Anthony Knyszek
Currently, there is a chance that the sweep termination condition could flap, causing e.g. runtime.GC to return before all sweep work has not only been drained, but also completed. CL 307915 and CL 307916 attempted to fix this problem, but it is still possible that mheap_.sweepDrained is marked before any outstanding sweepers are accounted for in mheap_.sweepers, leaving a window in which a thread could observe isSweepDone as true before it actually was (and after some time it would revert to false, then true again, depending on the number of outstanding sweepers at that point). This change fixes the sweep termination condition by merging mheap_.sweepers and mheap_.sweepDrained into a single atomic value. This value is updated such that a new potential sweeper will increment the oustanding sweeper count iff there are still outstanding spans to be swept without an outstanding sweeper to pick them up. This design simplifies the sweep termination condition into a single atomic load and comparison and ensures the condition never flaps. Updates #46500. Fixes #45315. When these packages are released as part of Go 1.18, Go 1.16 will no longer be supported, so we can remove the +build tags in these files. Ran go fix -fix=buildtag std cmd and then reverted the bootstrapDirs as defined in src/cmd/dist/buildtool.go, which need to continue to build with Go 1.4 for now. Also reverted src/vendor and src/cmd/vendor, which will need to be updated in their own repos first. Manual changes in runtime/pprof/mprof_test.go to adjust line numbers. For #41184. 2020-04-17net/http/pprof: support the "seconds" param for block, mutex profilesHana Kim
When the seconds param is given, the block and mutex profile endpoints report the difference between two measurements collected the given seconds apart. Historically, the block and mutex profiles have reported the cumulative counts since the process start, and it turned out they are more useful when interpreted along with the time duration. Note: cpu profile and trace endpoints already accept the "seconds" parameter. With this CL, the block and mutex profile endpoints will accept the "seconds" parameter. Providing the "seconds" parameter to other types of profiles is an error. This change moves runtime/pprof/internal/profile to internal/profile and adds part of merge logic from github.com/google/pprof/profile/merge.go to internal/profile, in order to allow both net/http/pprof and runtime/pprof to access it. 2017-02-24runtime/pprof: add streaming protobuf encoderRuss Cox
The existing code builds a full profile in memory. Then it translates that profile into a data structure (in memory). Then it marshals that data structure into a protocol buffer (in memory). Then it gzips that marshaled form into the underlying writer. So there are three copies of the full profile data in memory at the same time before we're done. This is obviously dumb. This CL implements a fully streaming conversion from the original in-memory profile to the underlying writer. There is now only one copy of the profile in memory. For the non-CPU profiles, this is optimal, since we have to have a full copy in memory to start with. For the CPU profiles, we could still try to bound the profile size stored in memory and stream fragments out during the actual profiling, as Go 1.7 did (with a simpler format), but so far that hasn't been necessary. The pprof code discards all heap allocations made by runtime routines. This caused it to discard heap allocations made by functions called by reflect.Call, as the calls are made via the functions `runtime.call32`, `runtime.call64`, etc. Fix the profiler to retain these heap allocations. It cannot run 'go tool pprof'. There is no guarantee that's installed. It needs to build a temporary pprof binary and run that.
