2026-03-25debug/elf: handle program header count overflowIan Lance Taylor
ELF files only have a 16-bit count for program headers. To handle the very rare case of larger files, a large program header count is stored as 0xffff and the first section header info field holds the actual count. NewFile returns the raw error from ReadAt when failing to read the ELF identifier, typically io.EOF for empty or short files. 2024-12-11debug/elf: adjust version API per issue discussionIan Lance Taylor
This updates the new version API for the discussion on #63952. This change reveals that in fact none of the tests set the VERSYM_HIDDEN bit. The code before this CL set the hidden flag for symbols that appear in DynamicVersionNeed, but that is not an accurate representation of the ELF. The readelf program does print undefined symbols that way (with a single '@'), but that doesn't mean that the hidden flag is set. Leaving tests with the hidden bit set for later. 2022-09-27debug/elf: return error on reading from SHT_NOBITS sectionsZeke Lu
An SHT_NOBITS section contains no bytes and occupies no space in the file. This change makes it return an error on reading from this section so that it will force the caller to check for an SHT_NNOBITS section. We have considered another option to return "nil, nil" for the Data method. It's abandoned because it might lead a program to simply do the wrong thing, thinking that the section is empty. Please note that it breaks programs which expect a byte slice with the length described by the sh_size field. There are two reasons to introduce this breaking change: 1. SHT_NOBITS means no data and it's unnecessary to allocate memory for it; 2. it could result in an OOM if the file is corrupted and has a huge sh_size. Fixes #54967. 2022-09-27debug/elf: suport files with >= 65280 (0xff00) sectionsZeke Lu
The spec https://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/elf/gabi4+/ch4.eheader.html states: 1. e_shnum: If the number of sections is greater than or equal to SHN_LORESERVE (0xff00), this member has the value zero and the actual number of section header table entries is contained in the sh_size field of the section header at index 0. 2. e_shstrndx: If the section name string table section index is greater than or equal to SHN_LORESERVE (0xff00), this member has the value SHN_XINDEX (0xffff) and the actual index of the section name string table section is contained in the sh_link field of the section header at index 0. This CL makes these changes to support files with >= 0xff00 sections: 1. if shoff > 0 && shnum == 0, read sh_size from the initial section header entry as shnum. 2. if shstrndx == SHN_XINDEX, read sh_link from the initial section header entry as shstrndx. It returns an error if the type of the initial section is not SHT_NULL. A file with >= 0xff00 sections is too big to include in the repository, so the test case constructs one on the fly, with some of the sections zeroed out. While here, remove the unnecessary use of reflect.DeepEqual in the test. Fixes #55294. 2020-08-31debug/elf: support relocations relative to sections with non-zero addressesVictor Michel
commit 72ec930fa70c20ce69b21bf32a7916c04c2e9c2f added basic support for relocations, but assumed that the symbol value would be 0, likely because .debug_info always has address == 0 in the ELF section headers. CL 195679 added further support for relocations, but explicitly encoded the original assumption that section addresses would be 0. This change removes that assumption: all relocations will now be properly computed based on the target symbol value even when that symbol is a section with a non-zero address. Typically, sections that are part of a LOAD program segment have non-zero addresses. For example, .debug_ranges relocations could be relative to .text, which usually has an address > 0. This adds support for compressed ELF sections. This compression is treated as a framing issue and hence the package APIs all transparently decompress compressed sections. GCC and LLVM support zlib-compressing DWARF debug sections (and there's some evidence that this may be happening by default in some circumstances now). Add support for reading compressed DWARF sections. Since ELF relocations apply to the decompressed data, decompression is done before applying relocations. Since relcations are applied by debug/elf, decompression must also be handled there. Note that this is different from compressed ELF sections, which is a more general mechanism used by very recent versions of GCC. Updates #11773. 2015-06-26debug/elf: change R_ARM_REL32 to R_ARM_ABS32 in applyRelocationsARMIan Lance Taylor
The original version of applyRelocationsARM was added in http://golang.org/cl/7266. It was added to fix the ARM build, which had been broken by http://golang.org/cl/6780. Before CL 6780, there was no relocation processing for ARM. CL 6780 changed the code to require relocation processing for every supported target. CL 7266 fixed the ARM build by adding a relocation processing function, but in fact no actual processing was done. The code only looked for REL32 relocations, but ARM debug info has no such relocations. The test case added in CL 7266 doesn't have any either. This didn't matter because no relocation processing was required on ARM, at least not for GCC-generated debug info. GCC generates ABS32 relocations, but only against section symbols which have the value 0. Therefore, the addition done by correct handling of ABS32 doesn't change anything. Clang, however, generates ABS32 relocations against local symbols, some of which have non-zero values. For those, we need to handle ABS32 relocations. This patch corrects the CL 7266 to look for ABS32 relocations instead of REL32 relocations. The code was already written to correctly handle ABS32 relocations, it just mistakenly said REL32. This is the ARM equivalent of https://golang.org/cl/96680045, which fixed the same problem in the same way for clang on 386. With this patch, clang-3.5 can be used to build Go on ARM GNU/Linux. Fixes #8980. 2015-04-12debug/dwarf: add DWARF attribute value class to FieldAustin Clements
To return DWARF attribute values, debug/dwarf maps the DWARF attribute value classes to Go types. Unfortunately, this mapping is ambiguous in a way that makes it impossible to correctly interpret some DWARF attributes as of DWARF 4. For example, AttrStartScope can be either a constant or a rangelistptr. The attribute is interpreted differently depending on its class, but debug/dwarf maps both classes to int64, so the caller can't distinguish them from the Go type. AttrDataMemberLocation is similar. To address this, this change adds a field to type Field that indicates the exact DWARF attribute value class of that field's value. This makes it possible to distinguish value classes that can't be distinguished by their Go type alone. The root of this type ambiguity was DWARF itself. For example, DWARF 2 made no distinction between constants that were just constants and constants that were section offsets because no attribute could have both meanings. Hence, the single int64 type was sufficient. To avoid introducing just another layer of ambiguity, this change takes pains to canonicalize ambiguous classes in DWARF 2 and 3 files into the unambiguous classes of DWARF 4. Of course, there's no guarantee that future DWARF versions won't do the same thing again and further subdivide the DWARF 4 classes. This change gets ahead of this somewhat by distinguishing the various *ptr classes even though the encoding does not. If there's some other form of split, we can handle this in a backwards-compatible way by introducing, for example, a Class5 field and type.
