2025-12-18t0001: handle `diff --no-index` gracefullyJohannes Schindelin
The test case 're-init to move gitdir symlink' wants to compare the contents of `newdir/.git`, which is a symbolic link pointing to a file. However, `git diff --no-index`, which is used by `test_cmp` on Windows, does not resolve symlinks; It shows the symlink _target_ instead (with a file mode of 120000). That is totally unexpected by the test case, which as a consequence fails, meaning that it's a bug in the test case itself. 2025-09-18initial branch: give hints after switching the default nameJunio C Hamano
It is likely that those who came to Git after 3.0 switched the default initial branch name to 'main' would still try to follow tutorials that were written before 3.0 happened and with the assumption that the tool would call the initial branch 'master'. To help these new users after 3.0 boundary, let's retain one part of the hint we will be giving before the default changes, namely, how to rename the branch an unconfigured Git has created just once. We do this without telling them how to permanently configure the default name of the initial branch, and that design choice is very much deliberate. The whole point of switching the default name was because we did not want to force individual users to configure their default branch name but while the hard wired default was 'master', they _had_ to configure it away from 'master' in order to conform to the recent norm, and a hint that tells them how to do so is useful. But once the default is renamed to 'main', that no longer is true. A narrower audience who are new users that follow an instruction that assumes the initial branch name is 'master' would only need to learn "here is how to change the branch name to match the tutorial you are following in the repository you created for practice", and "here is how you keep creating repositories with the first branch with a name everybody hates" is unnecessary. It also needs to be noted that the advise token to squelch the message is the same advice.defaultBranchName as before, which is also very much deliberate. The users who do have that configured are those who _have_ been using Git since before 3.0, and they are not the target audience for the new advice message. 2025-09-10breaking-changes: switch default branch to mainPhillip Wood
Since 1296cbe4b46 (init: document `init.defaultBranch` better, 2020-12-11) "git-init.adoc" has advertised that the default name of the initial branch may change in the future. The name "main" is chosen to match the default used by the big Git forge web sites. The advice printed when init.defaultBranch is not set is updated to say that the default will change to "main" in Git 3.0. Building with WITH_BREAKING_CHANGES enabled removes the advice and changes the default branch name to "main". The code in guess_remote_head() that looks for "refs/heads/master" is left unchanged as that is only called when the remote server does not support the symref capability in the v0 protocol or the symref extension to the ls-refs list in the v2 protocol. Such an old server is more likely to be using "master" as the default branch name. With the exception of the "git-init.adoc" the documentation is left unchanged. I had hoped to parameterize the name of the default branch by using an asciidoc attribute. Unfortunately attribute expansion is inhibited by backticks and we use backticks to mark up ref names so that idea does not work. As the changes to git-init.adoc show inserting ifdef's around each instance of the branch name "master" is cumbersome and makes the documentation sources harder to read. Apart from "git-init.adoc" there are some other files where "master" is used as the name of the initial branch rather than as an example of a branch name such as "user-manual.adoc" and "gitcore-tutorial.adoc". The name appears a lot in those so updating it with ifdef's is not really practical. We can update that document in the 3.0 release cycle. The other documentation where master is used as an example branch name can be gradually converted over time. 2025-07-07setup: use "reftable" format when experimental features are enabledPatrick Steinhardt
With the preceding commit we have announced the switch to the "reftable" format in Git 3.0 for newly created repositories. The format is being battle tested by GitLab and a couple of other developers, and except for a small handful of issues exposed early after it has been merged it has been rock solid. Regardless of that though the test user base is still comparatively small, which increases the risk that we miss critical bugs. Address this by enabling the reftable format when experimental features are enabled. This should increase the test user base by some margin and thus give us more input before making the format the default. The "reftable" format has come a long way and has matured nicely since it has been merged into git via 57db2a094d5 (refs: introduce reftable backend, 2024-02-07). It fixes longstanding issues that cannot be fixed with the "files" format in a backwards-compatible way and performs significantly better in many use cases. Announce that we will switch to the "reftable" format in Git 3.0 for newly created repositories and wire up the change, hidden behind the WITH_BREAKING_CHANGES preprocessor define. This switch is dependent on support in the larger Git ecosystem. Most importantly, libraries like JGit, libgit2 and Gitoxide should support the reftable backend so that we don't break all applications and tools built on top of those libraries. The exact same issue as described in the preceding commit also exists for GIT_DEFAULT_HASH. Thus, reinitializing a repository that e.g. uses SHA1 with `GIT_DEFAULT_HASH=sha256 git init` will cause the object format of that repository to change to SHA256. This is of course bogus as any existing objects and refs will not be converted, thus causing repository corruption: $ git init repo Initialized empty Git repository in /tmp/repo/.git/ $ cd repo/ $ git commit --allow-empty -m message [main (root-commit) 35a7344] message $ GIT_DEFAULT_HASH=sha256 git init Reinitialized existing Git repository in /tmp/repo/.git/ $ git show fatal: your current branch appears to be broken Fix the issue by ignoring the environment variable in case the repo has already been initialized with an object hash. The GIT_DEFAULT_REF_FORMAT environment variable can be set to influence the default ref format that new repostiories shall be initialized with. While this is the expected behaviour when creating a new repository, it is not when reinitializing a repository: we should retain the ref format currently used by it in that case. This doesn't work correctly right now: $ git init --ref-format=files repo Initialized empty Git repository in /tmp/repo/.git/ $ GIT_DEFAULT_REF_FORMAT=reftable git init repo fatal: could not open '/tmp/repo/.git/refs/heads' for writing: Is a directory Instead of retaining the current ref format, the reinitialization tries to reinitialize the repository with the different format. This action fails when git-init(1) tries to write the ".git/refs/heads" stub, which in the context of the reftable backend is always written as a file so that we can detect clients which inadvertently try to access the repo with the wrong ref format. Seems like the protection mechanism works for this case, as well. Fix the issue by ignoring the environment variable in case the repo has already been initialized with a ref storage format. This refactors `repair_worktree_after_gitdir_move()` to use the new `write_worktree_linking_files` function. It also preserves the relativity of the linking files; e.g., if an existing worktree used absolute paths then the repaired paths will be absolute (and visa-versa). `repair_worktree_after_gitdir_move()` is used to repair both sets of worktree linking files if the `.git` directory is moved during a re-initialization using `git init`. 2024-08-16setup: make object format configurable via configPatrick Steinhardt
The object format for repositories can either be configured explicitly by passing the `--object-format=` option to git-init(1) or git-clone(1), or globally by setting the `GIT_DEFAULT_HASH` environment variable. While the former makes sense, setting random environment variables is not really a good user experience in case someone decides to only use SHA256 repositories. It is only natural to expect for a user that things like this can also be configured via their config. As such, introduce a new config "init.defaultObjectFormat", similar to "init.defaultBranch", that allows the user to configure the default object format when creating new repos. The precedence order now is the following, where the first one wins: 1. The `--object-format=` switch. 2. The `GIT_DEFAULT_HASH` environment variable. 3. The `init.defaultObjectFormat` config variable. This matches the typical precedence order we use in Git. We typically let the environment override the config such that the latter can easily be overridden on an ephemeral basis, for example by scripts. It was reported that git-init(1) can fail when initializing an existing directory in case the config contains an "includeIf.onbranch:" condition: $ mkdir repo $ git -c includeIf.onbranch:main.path=nonexistent init repo BUG: refs.c:2056: reference backend is unknown The same error can also be triggered when re-initializing an already existing repository. The bug has been introduced in 173761e21b (setup: start tracking ref storage format, 2023-12-29), which wired up the ref storage format. The root cause is in `init_db()`, which tries to read the config before we have initialized `the_repository` and most importantly its ref storage format. We eventually end up calling `include_by_branch()` and execute `refs_resolve_ref_unsafe()`, but because we have not initialized the ref storage format yet this will trigger the above bug. Interestingly, `include_by_branch()` has a mechanism that will only cause us to resolve the ref when `the_repository->gitdir` is set. This is also the reason why this only happens when we initialize an already existing directory or repository: `gitdir` is set in those cases, but not when creating a new directory. Now there are two ways to address the issue: - We can adapt `include_by_branch()` to also make the code conditional on whether `the_repository->ref_storage_format` is set. - We can shift around code such that we initialize the repository format before we read the config. While the first approach would be safe, it may also cause us to paper over issues where a ref store should have been set up. In our case for example, it may be reasonable to expect that re-initializing the repo will cause the "onbranch:" condition to trigger, but we would not do that if the ref storage format was not set up yet. This also used to work before the above commit that introduced this bug. Rearrange the code such that we set up the repository format before reading the config. This fixes the bug and ensures that "onbranch:" conditions can trigger. 2024-01-02setup: introduce "extensions.refStorage" extensionPatrick Steinhardt
Introduce a new "extensions.refStorage" extension that allows us to specify the ref storage format used by a repository. For now, the only supported format is the "files" format, but this list will likely soon be extended to also support the upcoming "reftable" format. There have been discussions on the Git mailing list in the past around how exactly this extension should look like. One alternative [1] that was discussed was whether it would make sense to model the extension in such a way that backends are arbitrarily stackable. This would allow for a combined value of e.g. "loose,packed-refs" or "loose,reftable", which indicates that new refs would be written via "loose" files backend and compressed into "packed-refs" or "reftable" backends, respectively. It is arguable though whether this flexibility and the complexity that it brings with it is really required for now. It is not foreseeable that there will be a proliferation of backends in the near-term future, and the current set of existing formats and formats which are on the horizon can easily be configured with the much simpler proposal where we have a single value, only. Furthermore, if we ever see that we indeed want to gain the ability to arbitrarily stack the ref formats, then we can adapt the current extension rather easily. Given that Git clients will refuse any unknown value for the "extensions.refStorage" extension they would also know to ignore a stacked "loose,packed-refs" in the future. So let's stick with the easy proposal for the time being and wire up the extension. They are equivalents and the former still exists, so as long as the only change this commit makes are to rewrite test_i18ngrep to test_grep, there won't be any new bug, even if there still are callers of test_i18ngrep remaining in the tree, or when merged to other topics that add new uses of test_i18ngrep. This patch was produced more or less with git grep -l -e 'test_i18ngrep ' 't/t[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]-*.sh' | xargs perl -p -i -e 's/test_i18ngrep /test_grep /' and a good way to sanity check the result yourself is to run the above in a checkout of c4603c1c (test framework: further deprecate test_i18ngrep, 2023-10-31) and compare the resulting working tree contents with the result of applying this patch to the same commit. 2021-07-30t0001: fix broken not-quite getcwd(3) test in bed67874e2Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason
With a54e938e5b (strbuf: support long paths w/o read rights in strbuf_getcwd() on FreeBSD, 2017-03-26) we had t0001 break on systems like OpenBSD and AIX whose getcwd(3) has standard (but not like glibc et al) behavior. This was partially fixed in bed67874e2 (t0001: skip test with restrictive permissions if getpwd(3) respects them, 2017-08-07). The problem with that fix is that while its analysis of the problem is correct, it doesn't actually call getcwd(3), instead it invokes "pwd -P". There is no guarantee that "pwd -P" is going to call getcwd(3), as opposed to e.g. being a shell built-in. On AIX under both bash and ksh this test breaks because "pwd -P" will happily display the current working directory, but getcwd(3) called by the "git init" we're testing here will fail to get it. I checked whether clobbering the $PWD environment variable would affect it, and it didn't. Presumably these shells keep track of their working directory internally. There's possible follow-up work here in teaching strbuf_getcwd() to get the working directory with whatever method "pwd" uses on these platforms. 2021-05-25init: fix bug regarding ~/ expansion in init.templateDirMatheus Tavares
We used to read the init.templateDir setting at builtin/init-db.c using a git_config() callback that, in turn, called git_config_pathname(). To simplify the config reading logic at this file and plug a memory leak, this was replaced by a direct call to git_config_get_value() at e4de4502e6 ("init: remove git_init_db_config() while fixing leaks", 2021-03-14). However, this function doesn't provide path expanding semantics, like git_config_pathname() does, so paths with '~/' and '~user/' are treated literally. This makes 'git init' fail to handle init.templateDir paths using these constructs: $ git config init.templateDir '~/templates_dir' $ git init 'warning: templates not found in ~/templates_dir' Replace the git_config_get_value() call by git_config_get_pathname(), which does the '~/' and '~user/' expansions. Also add a regression test. Note that unlike git_config_get_value(), the config cache does not own the memory for the path returned by git_config_get_pathname(), so we must free() it. To give ample warning for users wishing to override Git's the fall-back for an unconfigured `init.defaultBranch` (in case we decide to change it in a future Git version), let's introduce some advice that is shown upon `git init` when that value is not set. Note: two test cases in Git's test suite want to verify that the `stderr` output of `git init` is empty. It is now necessary to suppress the advice, we now do that via the `init.defaultBranch` setting. While not strictly necessary, we also set this to `false` in `test_create_repo()`. 2020-10-23tests: start moving to a different default main branch nameJohannes Schindelin
To allow for an incremental conversion to a new default main branch name, let's introduce `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_MAIN_BRANCH_NAME`. This environment variable can be set at the top of each converted test script, overriding the default main branch name to use when initializing new repositories (or cloning empty repositories). Note: the `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_MAIN_BRANCH_NAME` is _not_ intended to be used manually; many tests require a specific main branch name and cannot simply work with another one. This `GIT_TEST_*` variable is meant purely for the transitional period while the entire test suite is converted to use `main` as the initial branch name by default. We also introduce the `PREPARE_FOR_MAIN_BRANCH` prereq that determines whether the default main branch name is `main`, and adjust a couple of test functions to use it. This prereq will be used to temporarily disable a couple test cases to allow for adjusting the test script incrementally. Once an entire test is adjusted, we will adjust the test so that it is run with `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_MAIN_BRANCH_NAME=main`. 2020-08-31init: make --separate-git-dir work from within linked worktreeEric Sunshine
The intention of `git init --separate-work-dir=<path>` is to move the .git/ directory to a location outside of the main worktree. When used within a linked worktree, however, rather than moving the .git/ directory as intended, it instead incorrectly moves the worktree's .git/worktrees/<id> directory to <path>, thus disconnecting the linked worktree from its parent repository and breaking the worktree in the process since its local .git file no longer points at a location at which it can find the object database. Fix this broken behavior. An intentional side-effect of this change is that it also closes a loophole not caught by ccf236a23a (init: disallow --separate-git-dir with bare repository, 2020-08-09) in which the check to prevent --separate-git-dir being used in conjunction with a bare repository was unable to detect the invalid combination when invoked from within a linked worktree. A linked worktree's .git file is a "gitfile" pointing at the .git/worktrees/<id> directory within the repository. When `git init --separate-git-dir=<path>` is used on an existing repository to relocate the repository's .git/ directory to a different location, it neglects to update the .git files of linked worktrees, thus breaking the worktrees by making it impossible for them to locate the repository. Fix this by teaching --separate-git-dir to repair the .git file of each linked worktree to point at the new repository location. The purpose of "git init --separate-git-dir" is to separate the repository from the worktree. This is true even when --separate-git-dir is used on an existing worktree, in which case, it moves the .git/ subdirectory to a new location outside the worktree. However, an outright bare repository (such as one created by "git init --bare"), has no worktree, so using --separate-git-dir to separate it from its non-existent worktree is nonsensical. Therefore, make it an error to use --separate-git-dir on a bare repository. Implementation note: "git init" considers a repository bare if told so explicitly via --bare or if it guesses it to be so based upon heuristics. In the explicit --bare case, a conflict with --separate-git-dir is easy to detect early. In the guessed case, however, the conflict can only be detected once "bareness" is guessed, which happens after "git init" has begun creating the repository. Technically, we can get by with a single late check which would cover both cases, however, erroring out early, when possible, without leaving detritus provides a better user experience. To change that branch name for new repositories, currently the only way to do that automatically is by copying all of Git's template directory, then hard-coding the desired default branch name into the `.git/HEAD` file, and then configuring `init.templateDir` to point to those copied template files. To make this process much less cumbersome, let's introduce a new option: `--initial-branch=<branch-name>`. On a case-insensitive filesystem, such as HFS+ or NTFS, it is possible that the idea Bash has of the current directory differs in case from what Git thinks it is. That's totally okay, though, and we should not expect otherwise. On Windows, for example, when you call cd C:\GIT-SDK-64 in a PowerShell and there exists a directory called `C:\git-sdk-64`, the current directory will be reported in all upper-case. Even in a Bash that you might call from that PowerShell. Git, however, will have normalized this via `GetFinalPathByHandle()`, and the expectation in t0001 that the recorded gitdir will match what `pwd` says will be violated. Let's address this by comparing these paths in a case-insensitive manner when `core.ignoreCase` is `true`. Reported by Jameson Miller. For an environment variable that is supposed to be set by users, the GIT_TR2* env vars are just too unclear, inconsistent, and ugly. Most of the established GIT_* environment variables don't use abbreviations, and in case of the few that do (GIT_DIR, GIT_COMMON_DIR, GIT_DIFF_OPTS) it's quite obvious what the abbreviations (DIR and OPTS) stand for. But what does TR stand for? Track, traditional, trailer, transaction, transfer, transformation, transition, translation, transplant, transport, traversal, tree, trigger, truncate, trust, or ...?! The trace2 facility, as the '2' suffix in its name suggests, is supposed to eventually supercede Git's original trace facility. It's reasonable to expect that the corresponding environment variables follow suit, and after the original GIT_TRACE variables they are called GIT_TRACE2; there is no such thing is 'GIT_TR'. All trace2-specific config variables are, very sensibly, in the 'trace2' section, not in 'tr2'. OTOH, we don't gain anything at all by omitting the last three characters of "trace" from the names of these environment variables. So let's rename all GIT_TR2* environment variables to GIT_TRACE2*, before they make their way into a stable release. During git-init we chdir() to the target directory, but --template is not adjusted. So it's relative to the target directory instead of current directory. It would be ok if it's documented, but --template in git-init.txt mentions nothing about this behavior. Change it to be relative to $CWD, which is much more intuitive. The changes in the test suite show that this relative-to-target behavior is actually used. I just hope that it's only used in the test suite and it's safe to change. This is a brown paper bag. When adding the tests, we actually failed to verify that the config variable is heeded in git-init at all. And when changing the original patch that marked the .git/ directory as hidden after reading the config, it was lost on this developer that the new code would use the hide_dotfiles variable before the config was read. The fix is obvious: read the (limited, pre-init) config *before* creating the .git/ directory. Please note that we cannot remove the identical-looking `git_config()` call from `create_default_files()`: we create the `.git/` directory between those calls. If we removed it, and if the parent directory is in a Git worktree, and if that worktree's `.git/config` contained any `init.templatedir` setting, we would all of a sudden pick that up. Create a new unified tracing facility for git. The eventual intent is to replace the current trace_printf* and trace_performance* routines with a unified set of git_trace2* routines. In addition to the usual printf-style API, trace2 provides higer-level event verbs with fixed-fields allowing structured data to be written. This makes post-processing and analysis easier for external tools. Trace2 defines 3 output targets. These are set using the environment variables "GIT_TR2", "GIT_TR2_PERF", and "GIT_TR2_EVENT". These may be set to "1" or to an absolute pathname (just like the current GIT_TRACE). * GIT_TR2 is intended to be a replacement for GIT_TRACE and logs command summary data. * GIT_TR2_PERF is intended as a replacement for GIT_TRACE_PERFORMANCE. It extends the output with columns for the command process, thread, repo, absolute and relative elapsed times. It reports events for child process start/stop, thread start/stop, and per-thread function nesting. * GIT_TR2_EVENT is a new structured format. It writes event data as a series of JSON records. Calls to trace2 functions log to any of the 3 output targets enabled without the need to call different trace_printf* or trace_performance* routines. 2018-11-20tests: send "bug in the test script" errors to the script's stderrSZEDER Gábor
Some of the functions in our test library check that they were invoked properly with conditions like this: test "$#" = 2 || error "bug in the test script: not 2 parameters to test-expect-success" If this particular condition is triggered, then 'error' will abort the whole test script with a bold red error message [1] right away. However, under certain circumstances the test script will be aborted completely silently, namely if: - a similar condition in a test helper function like 'test_line_count' is triggered, - which is invoked from the test script's "main" shell [2], - and the test script is run manually (i.e. './t1234-foo.sh' as opposed to 'make t1234-foo.sh' or 'make test') [3] - and without the '--verbose' option, because the error message is printed from within 'test_eval_', where standard output is redirected either to /dev/null or to a log file. The only indication that something is wrong is that not all tests in the script are executed and at the end of the test script's output there is no "# passed all N tests" message, which are subtle and can easily go unnoticed, as I had to experience myself. Send these "bug in the test script" error messages directly to the test scripts standard error and thus to the terminal, so those bugs will be much harder to overlook. Instead of updating all ~20 such 'error' calls with a redirection, let's add a BUG() function to 'test-lib.sh', wrapping an 'error' call with the proper redirection and also including the common prefix of those error messages, and convert all those call sites [4] to use this new BUG() function instead. [1] That particular error message from 'test_expect_success' is printed in color only when running with or without '--verbose'; with '--tee' or '--verbose-log' the error is printed without color, but it is printed to the terminal nonetheless. [2] If such a condition is triggered in a subshell of a test, then 'error' won't be able to abort the whole test script, but only the subshell, which in turn causes the test to fail in the usual way, indicating loudly and clearly that something is wrong. [3] Well, 'error' aborts the test script the same way when run manually or by 'make' or 'prove', but both 'make' and 'prove' pay attention to the test script's exit status, and even a silently aborted test script would then trigger those tools' usual noticable error messages. [4] Strictly speaking, not all those 'error' calls need that redirection to send their output to the terminal, see e.g. 'test_expect_success' in the opening example, but I think it's better to be consistent.
