Some ref backend storage can hold not just the object name of an
annotated tag, but the object name of the object the tag points at.
The code to handle this information has been streamlined.

The `each_ref_fn` callback function type is used across our code base
for several different functions that iterate through reference. There's
a bunch of callbacks implementing this type, which makes any changes to
the callback signature extremely noisy. An example of the required churn
is e8207717f1 (refs: add referent to each_ref_fn, 2024-08-09): adding a
single argument required us to change 48 files.
It was already proposed back then [1] that we might want to introduce a
wrapper structure to alleviate the pain going forward. While this of
course requires the same kind of global refactoring as just introducing
a new parameter, it at least allows us to more change the callback type
afterwards by just extending the wrapper structure.
One counterargument to this refactoring is that it makes the structure
more opaque. While it is obvious which callsites need to be fixed up
when we change the function type, it's not obvious anymore once we use
a structure. That being said, we only have a handful of sites that
actually need to populate this wrapper structure: our ref backends,
"refs/iterator.c" as well as very few sites that invoke the iterator
callback functions directly.
Introduce this wrapper structure so that we can adapt the iterator
interfaces more readily.

We have a bunch of different sites that want to iterate through all
packs of a given `struct packfile_store`. This pattern is somewhat
verbose and repetitive, which makes it somewhat cumbersome.
Introduce a new macro `repo_for_each_pack()` that removes some of the
boilerplate.

returns its packfiles. Refactor it to accept a packfile store instead of
a repository to clarify its scope.

In the preceding commits we have renamed the structures contained in
"object-store.h" to `struct object_database` and `struct odb_backend`.
As such, the code files "object-store.{c,h}" are confusingly named now.
Rename them to "odb.{c,h}" accordingly.

The "object-store-ll.h" header has been introduced to keep transitive
header dependendcies and compile times at bay. Now that we have created
a new "object-store.c" file though we can easily move the last remaining
additional bit of "object-store.h", the `odb_path_map`, out of the
header.
Do so. As the "object-store.h" header is now equivalent to its low-level
alternative we drop the latter and inline it into the former.

The `safe_create_leading_directories()` function and its relatives are
located in "object-file.c", which is not a good fit as they provide
generic functionality not related to objects at all. Move them into
"path.c", which already hosts `safe_create_dir()` and its relative
`safe_create_dir_in_gitdir()`.
"path.c" is free of `the_repository`, but the moved functions depend on
`the_repository` to read the "core.sharedRepository" config. Adapt the
function signature to accept a repository as argument to fix the issue
and adjust callers accordingly.

With the preceding refactorings we now only have a couple of implicit
users of `the_repository` left in the "path" subsystem, all of which
depend on global state via `calc_shared_perm()`. Make the dependency on
`the_repository` explicit by passing the repo as a parameter instead and
adjust callers accordingly.
Note that this change bubbles up into a couple of subsystems that were
previously declared as free from `the_repository`. Instead of marking
all of them as `the_repository`-dependent again, we instead use the
repository that is available in the calling context. There are three
exceptions though with "copy.c", "pack-write.c" and "tempfile.c".
Adjusting these would require us to adapt callsites all over the place,
so this is left for a future iteration.
Mark "path.c" as free from `the_repository`.

Stop using `the_repository` in the "server-info" subsystem by passing in
a repository when updating server info and storing the repository in the
`update_info_ctx` structure to make it accessible to other functions.
Adjust callers accordingly by using `the_repository`. While there may be
some callers that have a repository available in their context, this
trivial conversion allows for easier verification and bubbles up the use
of `the_repository` by one level.

allows for a structured approach to get rid of all such warnings over
time in a way that can be easily measured.

The `get_object_directory()` function retrieves the path to the object
directory for `the_repository`. Make it accept a `struct repository`
such that it can work on arbitrary repositories and make it part of the
repository subsystem. This reduces our reliance on `the_repository` and
clarifies scope.

Use of the `the_repository` variable is deprecated nowadays, and we
slowly but steadily convert the codebase to not use it anymore. Instead,
callers should be passing down the repository to work on via parameters.
It is hard though to prove that a given code unit does not use this
variable anymore. The most trivial case, merely demonstrating that there
is no direct use of `the_repository`, is already a bit of a pain during
code reviews as the reviewer needs to manually verify claims made by the
patch author. The bigger problem though is that we have many interfaces
that implicitly rely on `the_repository`.
Introduce a new `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` macro that allows code
units to opt into usage of `the_repository`. The intent of this macro is
to demonstrate that a certain code unit does not use this variable
anymore, and to keep it from new dependencies on it in future changes,
be it explicit or implicit
For now, the macro only guards `the_repository` itself as well as
`the_hash_algo`. There are many more known interfaces where we have an
implicit dependency on `the_repository`, but those are not guarded at
the current point in time. Over time though, we should start to add
guards as required (or even better, just remove them).
Define the macro as required in our code units. As expected, most of our
code still relies on the global variable. Nearly all of our builtins
rely on the variable as there is no way yet to pass `the_repository` to
their entry point. For now, declare the macro in "biultin.h" to keep the
required changes at least a little bit more contained.

The update_info_file() function within server-info.c is responsible for
moving the info/refs and info/packs files around when updating server
info.
These updates are staged into a temporary file and then moved into place
atomically to avoid race conditions when reading those files. However,
the temporary file used to stage these changes is managed outside of the
tempfile.h API, and thus survives process death.
Manage these files instead with the tempfile.h API so that they are
automatically cleaned up upon abnormal process death.
Unfortunately, and unlike in the previous step, there isn't a
straightforward way to inject a failure into the update-server-info step
that causes us to die() rather than take the cleanup path in label
'out', hence the lack of a test here.

alloc_nr, ALLOC_GROW, and ALLOC_GROW_BY are commonly used macros for
dynamic array allocation. Moving these macros to git-compat-util.h with
the other alloc macros focuses alloc.[ch] to allocation for Git objects
and additionally allows us to remove inclusions to alloc.h from files
that solely used the above macros.

The vast majority of files including object-store.h did not need dir.h
nor khash.h. Split the header into two files, and let most just depend
upon object-store-ll.h, while letting the two callers that need it
depend on the full object-store.h.
After this patch:
$ git grep -h include..object-store | sort | uniq -c
2 #include "object-store.h"
129 #include "object-store-ll.h"
Diff best viewed with `--color-moved`.

Ever since a64215b6cd ("object.h: stop depending on cache.h; make
cache.h depend on object.h", 2023-02-24), we have a few headers that
could have replaced their include of cache.h with an include of
object.h. Make that change now.
Some C files had to start including cache.h after this change (or some
smaller header it had brought in), because the C files were depending
on things from cache.h but were only formerly implicitly getting
cache.h through one of these headers being modified in this patch.

As reported in [1] the "UNUSED(var)" macro introduced in
2174b8c75de (Merge branch 'jk/unused-annotation' into next,
2022-08-24) breaks coccinelle's parsing of our sources in files where
it occurs.
Let's instead partially go with the approach suggested in [2] of
making this not take an argument. As noted in [1] "coccinelle" will
ignore such tokens in argument lists that it doesn't know about, and
it's less of a surprise to syntax highlighters.
This undoes the "help us notice when a parameter marked as unused is
actually use" part of 9b240347543 (git-compat-util: add UNUSED macro,
2022-08-19), a subsequent commit will further tweak the macro to
implement a replacement for that functionality.

Do not change the existing info/refs and objects/info/packs
files if they match the existing content on the filesystem.
This is intended to preserve mtime and make it easier for dumb
HTTP pollers to rely on the If-Modified-Since header.
Combined with stdio and kernel buffering; the kernel should be
able to avoid block layer writes and reduce wear for small files.
As a result, the --force option is no longer needed. So stop
documenting it, but let it remain for compatibility (and
debugging, if necessary).
v3: perform incremental comparison while generating to avoid
OOM with giant files. Remove documentation for --force.

When writing objects/info/packs, we use the basename of each pack
(i.e., just the "pack-1234abcd.pack" part). We compute that manually by
adding "objdirlen + 6" to the name.
This _should_ work consistently, as we do not include non-local packs,
meaning everything should be in $objdir/pack/. Before f13d7db4af
(server-info.c: use pack_local like everybody else., 2005-12-05), this
was definitely true, since we computed "local" based on comparing the
objdir string. Since then, we're relying on the code on packfile.c to
match our expectations of p->pack_name and p->local.
I think our expectations do still hold today, but we can be a bit more
defensive by just using pack_basename() to get the base. That
future-proofs us, and should hopefully be more obviously safe to
somebody reading the code.

We keep an array of struct pointers, with each one representing a single
packfile. But for some reason there is a nr_alloc parameter inside each
struct, which has never been used.
This is probably cruft left over from development, where we might have
wanted a nr_alloc to dynamically grow the list. But as it turns out, we
do not dynamically grow the list at all, but rather count up the total
number of packs and use that as a maximum size. So while we're thinking
of this, let's add an assert() that documents (and checks!) that our
allocation and fill loops stay in sync.

This old code uses fgets with a fixed-size buffer. Let's use a strbuf
instead, so we don't have to wonder if "1000" is big enough, or what
happens if we see a long line.
This also lets us drop our custom code to trim the newline.
Probably nobody actually cares about the 1000-char limit (after all, the
lines generally only say "P pack-[0-9a-f]{40}.pack"), so this is mostly
just about cleanup/readability.

We have two exits from the function: either we jump to the out_stale
label or not. But in both exits we repeat our cleanup, and the only
difference is our return value. Let's just use a variable for the return
value to avoid repeating ourselves.

When we're writing out a new objects/info/packs file, we read back the
old one to try to keep the ordering the same. When we see a line
starting with "P", we expect "P pack-1234..." and blindly jump to "line
+ 2" to parse the pack name. If we saw a line with _just_ "P" and
nothing else, we'd jump past the end of the buffer and start reading
arbitrary memory.
This shouldn't be a big attack vector, as the files are local to the
repository and written by us, but it's clearly worth fixing (we do read
remote copies of the file for dumb-http fetches, but using a totally
different parser!).
Let's instead use skip_prefix() here, which avoids pointer arithmetic
altogether. Note that this converts our switch statement to an if/else
chain, making it slightly more verbose. But it will also make it easier
to do a few follow-on cleanups.

There are many places in the codebase that want to iterate over
all packfiles known to Git. The purposes are wide-ranging, and
those that can take advantage of the multi-pack-index already
do. So, use get_all_packs() instead of get_packed_git() to be
sure we are iterating over all packfiles.

mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle
repositories other than the_repository yet.
As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a

The head member of struct pack_info is completely unused and the
nr_heads member is used only in one place, which is an assignment. This
member was last usefully used in 3e15c67c90 (server-info: throw away T
computation as well, 2005-12-04).
Since this structure member is not useful, remove it.

The reason callers have to call this is to make sure either packed_git
or packed_git_mru pointers are initialized since we don't do that by
default. Sometimes it's hard to see this connection between where the
function is called and where packed_git pointer is used (sometimes in
separate functions).
Keep this dependency internal because now all access to packed_git and
packed_git_mru must go through get_xxx() wrappers.

In a process with multiple repositories open, packfile accessors
should be associated to a single repository and not shared globally.
Move packed_git and packed_git_mru into the_repository and adjust
callers to reflect this.
[nd: while at there, wrap access to these two fields in get_packed_git()
and get_packed_git_mru(). This allows us to lazily initialize these
fields without caller doing that explicitly]
