Following CL 412474, for the rest of the LR architectures. On MIPS(32/64), S390X, and RISCV, there is no single instruction that saves the LR and decrements the SP, so we need to insert an instruction to save the LR after decrementing the SP. On ARM(32) and PPC64 we already use a single instruction to save the LR and decrement the SP. Updates #53374. This adds a debugging hook for optionally calling a "maymorestack" function in the prologue of any function that might call morestack (whether it does at run time or not). 2021-02-19cmd/asm, cmd/link, runtime: introduce FuncInfo flag bitsRuss Cox
The runtime traceback code has its own definition of which functions mark the top frame of a stack, separate from the TOPFRAME bits that exist in the assembly and are passed along in DWARF information. It's error-prone and redundant to have two different sources of truth. This CL provides the actual TOPFRAME bits to the runtime, so that the runtime can use those bits instead of reinventing its own category. This CL also adds a new bit, SPWRITE, which marks functions that write directly to SP (anything but adding and subtracting constants). Such functions must stop a traceback, because the traceback has no way to rederive the SP on entry. Again, the runtime has its own definition which is mostly correct, but also missing some functions. During ordinary goroutine context switches, such functions do not appear on the stack, so the incompleteness in the runtime usually doesn't matter. But profiling signals can arrive at any moment, and the runtime may crash during traceback if it attempts to unwind an SP-writing frame and gets out-of-sync with the actual stack. The runtime contains code to try to detect likely candidates but again it is incomplete. Deriving the SPWRITE bit automatically from the actual assembly code provides the complete truth, and passing it to the runtime lets the runtime use it. This CL is part of a stack adding windows/arm64 support (#36439), intended to land in the Go 1.17 cycle. This CL is, however, not windows/arm64-specific. It is cleanup meant to make the port (and future ports) easier. 2020-05-06cmd/internal/obj, runtime: preempt & restart some instruction sequencesCherry Zhang
On some architectures, for async preemption the injected call needs to clobber a register (usually REGTMP) in order to return to the preempted function. As a consequence, the PC ranges where REGTMP is live are not preemptible. The uses of REGTMP are usually generated by the assembler, where it needs to load or materialize a large constant or offset that doesn't fit into the instruction. In those cases, REGTMP is not live at the start of the instruction sequence. Instead of giving up preemption in those cases, we could preempt it and restart the sequence when resuming the execution. Basically, this is like reissuing an interrupted instruction, except that here the "instruction" is a Prog that consists of multiple machine instructions. For this to work, we need to generate PC data to mark the start of the Prog. Currently this is only done for ARM64. TODO: the split-stack function prologue is currently not async preemptible. We could use this mechanism, preempt it and restart at the function entry. When there are both a synchronous preemption request (by clobbering the stack guard) and an asynchronous one (by signal), the running goroutine may observe the synchronous request first in stack bounds check, and go to the path of calling morestack. If the preemption signal arrives at this point before the call to morestack, the goroutine will be asynchronously preempted, entering the scheduler. When it is resumed, the scheduler clears the preemption request, unclobbers the stack guard. But the resumed goroutine will still call morestack, as it is already on its way. morestack will, as there is no preemption request, double the stack unnecessarily. If this happens multiple times, the stack may grow too big, although only a small amount is actually used. To fix this, we mark the stack bounds check and the call to morestack async-nonpreemptible, starting after the memory instruction (mostly a load, on x86 CMP with memory). Not done for Wasm as it does not support async preemption. Fixes #35470. For async preemption, we will be using REGTMP as a temporary register in injected call on MIPS, which will clobber it. So any code that uses REGTMP is not safe for async preemption. In the assembler backend, we expand a Prog to multiple machine instructions and use REGTMP as a temporary register if necessary. These need to be marked unsafe. In fact, most of the multi-instruction Progs use REGTMP, so we mark all of them, except ones that are whitelisted. The asm encoder generally assumes that the lowest 5 bits of the REG_XX constants match the machine instruction encoding, i.e. the lowest 5 bits is the register number. 2018-03-15cmd/internal/obj/mips: load/store even float registers firstJames Cowgill
There is a bug in Octeon III processors where storing an odd floating point register after it has recently been written to by a double floating point operation will store the old value from before the double operation (there are some extra details - the operation and store must be a certain number of cycles apart). However, this bug does not occur if the even register is stored first. Currently the bug only happens on big endian because go always loads the even register first on little endian. Workaround the bug by always loading / storing the even floating point register first. Since this is just an instruction reordering, it should have no performance penalty. This follows other compilers like GCC which will always store the even register first (although you do have to set the ISA level to MIPS I to prevent it from using SDC1). 2018-02-13cmd/internal/obj/mips: fix use of R28 on 32-bit MIPSCherry Zhang
R28 is used as the SB register on MIPS64, and it was printed as "RSB" on both 32-bit and 64-bit MIPS. This is confusing on MIPS32 as there R28 is just a general purpose register. Further, this string representation is used in the assembler's frontend to parse register symbols, and this leads to failure in parsing R28 in MIPS32 assembly code. Change rconv to always print the register as R28. This fixes the parsing problem on MIPS32, and this is a reasonable representation on both MIPS32 and MIPS64. 2017-10-11cmd/compile: abort earlier if stack frame too largeKeith Randall
If the stack frame is too large, abort immediately. We used to generate code first, then abort. In issue 22200, generating code raised a panic so we got an ICE instead of an error message. Change the max frame size to 1GB (from 2GB). Stack frames between 1.1GB and 2GB didn't used to work anyway, the pcln table generation would have failed and generated an ICE. 2017-08-02cmd/compile: set/unset base register for better assembly printCherry Zhang
For address of an auto or arg, on all non-x86 architectures the assembler backend encodes the actual SP offset in the instruction but leaves the offset in Prog unchanged. When the assembly is printed in compile -S, it shows an offset relative to pseudo FP/SP with an actual hardware SP base register (e.g. R13 on ARM). This is confusing. Unset the base register if it is indeed SP, so the assembly output is consistent. If the base register isn't SP, it should be an error and the error output contains the actual base register. For address loading instructions, the base register isn't set in the compiler on non-x86 architectures. Set it. Normally it is SP and will be unset in the change mentioned above for printing. If it is not, it will be an error and the error output contains the actual base register. No change in generated binary, only printed assembly. Passes "go build -a -toolexec 'toolstash -cmp' std cmd" on all architectures. Fixes #21064. LLV and SCV are 64-bit load-linked and store-conditional. They were used in runtime as #define WORD. Change them to normal instruction form. NOOP is hardware no-op. It was written as WORD $0. 2017-04-19cmd/internal/objabi: extract shared functionality from objMatthew Dempsky
Now only cmd/asm and cmd/compile depend on cmd/internal/obj. Changing the assembler backends no longer requires reinstalling cmd/link or cmd/addr2line. There's also now one canonical definition of the object file format in cmd/internal/objabi/doc.go, with a warning to update all three implementations. objabi is still something of a grab bag of unrelated code (e.g., flag and environment variable handling probably belong in a separate "tool" package), but this is still progress. Prior to this CL, flags such as NOSPLIT on ATEXT Progs were stored in From3.Offset. Some but not all of those flags were also duplicated into From.Sym.Attribute. This CL migrates all of those flags into From.Sym.Attribute and stops creating a From3. A side-effect of this is that printing an ATEXT Prog can no longer simply dump From3.Offset. That's kind of good, since the raw flag value wasn't very informative anyway, but it did necessitate a bunch of updates to the cmd/asm tests. The reason I'm doing this work now is that avoiding storing flags in both From.Sym and From3.Offset simplifies some other changes to fix the data race first described in CL 40254. This CL almost passes toolstash-check -all. The only changes are in cases where the assembler has decided that a function's flags may be altered, e.g. to make a function with no calls in it NOSPLIT. Prior to this CL, that information was not printed.
